Course Set - HLTAID011 & HLTWHS005 (First Aid & Manual Handling) (General)
In every workplace, workers may be exposed to day-to-day activities that involve some form of manual handling, with varying degrees of risk. These tasks are a common cause of workplace injury, making it essential to understand how to perform them safely. Workers may also encounter situations requiring a first aid response, making the ability to recognise and respond appropriately to an illness, injury or emergency an important workplace skill.
This course equips participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks, identify sources of risk and relevant risk factors, and apply appropriate control measures. Participants will learn how to prepare for and complete manual tasks using safe manual handling techniques that support safe work practices. The course also covers body movement and mechanics, the importance of appropriate posture and positioning, and how to recognise and report symptoms of injury.
In addition, participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a range of situations and environments. This includes recognising and responding to common injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies; seeking appropriate emergency assistance; performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) in accordance with current guidelines. Participants will also learn to provide initial first aid care until emergency services or other appropriate assistance arrives.
Training aligns with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, industry codes of practice, and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
Please note: Individuals working in health or community sectors assisting patients or clients (e.g. disability support or aged care workers) may find the HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely (Personal Care Workers) course more suitable.
