Course Set - RIIWHS202E & RIIWHS204E Confined spaces and Working at heights

This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces and work safely at heights at an operational level typically in the resources and infrastructure industries.  Many roles require both confined space and work safely at heights training, including safety, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers and transport personnel.

Participants will learn to distinguish what constitutes a confined space and working at height; key terminology; as well as understand the regulations and legislative requirements governing entering and working in and around confined spaces as well as working safely at heights. Participants will identify hazards, risks and environmental factors as well as implement appropriate control measures; conduct two risk assessments and apply for two confined space entry permits. The course also teaches students to interpret and apply risk assessment documentation, technical and safety information as well as understand the strengths and limitations of the fall protection equipment available for working safely at heights.

Students will perform two work safely at heights scenarios using various safety systems. This includes installing equipment checking and correctly fitting, adjusting and anchoring fall protection systems and associated equipment.

Students will demonstrate how to enter, exit and work safely in a confined space according to an issued permit for two scenarios. Participants will also inspect and select appropriate personal protective gear; operate various confined space safety equipment including atmospheric testing/monitoring devices; and conduct routine servicing of all equipment and gear.

Units Delivered

The following units will be included in your certificate:

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher face-to-face contact time of at least 7 Hours
Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 12 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment face-to-face contact time of at least 6 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID),
  • Psychological* and physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstrations for this course, such as undertaking the requirements to work safely at heights and to safely enter, work in and exit a confined space while wearing appropriate PPE and using fall protection equipment. This may involve climbing up, down, through or under structures or confined spaces, accessing heights above 2m, being suspended, wearing harnesses and other relevant PPE, and performing tasks such as lifting and moving equipment, including infrequent lifting from ground to overhead, in confined or restricted environments in dark, low light or smoke-filled areas.
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.

  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Follow instructions, identify hazards, understand risk assessments, and ask questions or seek clarification when unsure to maintain safety for self and others.
    • Reading: Read and understand workplace procedures, safety rules, regulations, signage, and operational instructions related to the task and equipment use.
    • Writing: Complete workplace forms, write short notes (such as field notes or incident reports), and record key details from work tasks.
    • Oral communication: Use appropriate communication methods (such as speaking, radios or signals) to share clear information, listen carefully, and confirm understanding with others.
    • Numeracy: Use numbers to support safe work practices, such as understanding time, measurements, levels, distances, fall clearance, and interpreting equipment ratings.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

*Safe Work Australia notes “Working in a confined space may impose additional physiological demands over and above those encountered in a normal working environment. Consideration should be given to a worker’s:

  • physical ability;
  • ability to work in a restrictive space (for example claustrophobia)
  • ability to wear the PPE required to do the work (for example respirators).

Confined spaces can also give rise to psychosocial hazards such as:

  • high job demands (e.g. high levels of physical, mental or emotional effort are needed to do the job)
  • low job control (e.g. workers unable to limit where they are required to work in a restrictive space)
  • poor physical environments (e.g. performing hazardous work, doing demanding work while wearing uncomfortable PPE, conditions that affect concentration or are unpleasant), and
  • remote or isolated work (e.g. significant delays to entering or exiting the space, or difficulty getting help in an emergency).”

SWA Code of Practice - Confined Space

Online learningStudents must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 4-5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Individuals undertaking this course set will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

The units have the following recommended renewal periods:
Unit Period
RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces Not applicable
RIIWHS204E - Work safely at heights Not applicable
